Fujitsu TFC 3450

The Fujitsu TFC-3450 was a desktop computer equipped with two floppy drives. It's CPU was the Panafacom MN1610, a 16-bit CPU designed by Panafacom in 1975. The TFC had 128kByte of memory, which for the time was large. The computer came with two disk drives, and two serial connectors. The machine had support for both asynchronous and ynchronous serial communications. There was also a parallel printer connection, but it was not the standard centronics style. Fujitsu also provided a dot-matrix printer. The monochrome screen could display 25x80 characters, but the 25th line was used as a status line with a number of indicators for the OS.

CPU - The MN 1610

The Panafacom MN1610 was introduced in 1975 as one of the world’s first single-chip 16-bit microprocessors. Architecturally, it implemented a true 16-bit data path with a 16-bit wide arithmetic logic unit and a 16-bit instruction set, placing it ahead of the 8-bit CPUs that dominated the mid-1970s such as the Intel 8080 and MOS 6502. It supported a 16-bit address space, allowing access to up to 64 KB of memory, and employed a register-based design that facilitated faster arithmetic and logical operations compared to accumulator-centric 8-bit processors. The instruction set included general-purpose data movement, arithmetic, logical, and control flow operations suitable for both control systems and higher-level language support.

From an implementation perspective, the MN1610 typically operated at around 2 MHz, with companion chips like the MN1630 for input/output handling. It was packaged in a 40-pin DIP and designed to be expandable through peripheral adapters, making it suitable for microcomputer systems such as the Panafacom Lkit-16 and later Fujitsu TFC-3450. Its early adoption of a unified single-chip 16-bit design provided a foundation for multitasking operating systems like OS-9 when paired with sufficient memory, and it also supported monitor programs and Tiny BASIC in ROM on smaller systems. Despite being an advanced design for its time, its use was mostly confined to Japanese systems, and it remained relatively obscure internationally compared to Western contemporaries like the Intel 8086.
