The Silex, an Apple II clone.

The Leanord Silex is an Apple II clone. Leanord rode the success of the Apple microcomputer and produced the Silex for the French market out of their factory in Lille. The computer had an optional modem, a real time clock card, and could be equipped with a Winchester 5MB hard drive, or an extra 5.25" external disk drive. The computer had a built in 12" monochrome monitor and was capable of 80x24 text, and 192x280 pixel graphics. The machine was equipped with 32kByte of RAM, which could be expanded to 64kByte, and ran on the MOS 6502 which clocked in at 1MHz.

Leanord Company

Leanord is the name of a computer hardware company from Lille France. It was founded by Bernard Pronier. After producing and marketing a few orignial microcomputers, Leanord produced an Apple II clone which was branded the Leanord Silex. When CP/M became more or less a standard operating system, driven by Digital Research, the company switched and started producing Z80 based systems, such as the SIL'Z 3 and later produced Intel 8088 based MS-DOS machines like the SIL'Z 16. Leanord kept producing clones, in fact,t he SIL'Z 16 is a clone of the American FX20 by Future Computers. Leanord made some modifications so it could produce the computer on its assembly lines in Lille, but it basically remained the same machine as the FX20.

CPU View - MOS 6502

The 6502 is an 8-bit MicroProcessor designed by MOS Technology. The team was led by Chuck Peddle and had also worked on the Motorola 6800. The 6502 is a simplified, but faster and cheaper design than the 6800.

The 6502 was introduced in 1975 and was the cheapest microprocessor on the market. Together with the Zilog Z80, the 6502 helped start the home computer revolution of the 1980s. The 6502 was used in a wide range of devices: the Atari 2600, the 8-bit Atari home computers, the Apple II, the Nintendo Entertainment System, the Commodore 64, the BBC Micro and many others. All used the 6502 or a variation of it.

The 6502 is a 1MHz design, while the 6502A is designed for 2MHz. The 6502A is 100% compatible with the original 6502.

Commodore soon bought MOS Technology, but conitnued to sell the microprocessor to competitors and licensed the design to other manufacturers.
