IBM System/34
The IBM System/34, introduced in 1977, was a midrange computer designed as a successor to the System/32 and System/3. It was specifically aimed at small and medium-sized businesses, providing a robust solution for managing business processes like accounting, inventory control, and payroll. One of its standout features was its multi-user capability, allowing multiple users to access the system simultaneously via terminals. This made it a significant improvement over earlier single-user systems and a valuable tool for businesses looking to increase operational efficiency. The System/34 also supported RPG II, a popular programming language from the System/3 era, ensuring continuity for businesses transitioning to the newer system.
Despite its innovations, the System/34 eventually faced limitations due to its aging architecture and the rapidly evolving computing landscape. However, its influence was lasting; it paved the way for the System/38 and, later, the AS/400, which continued to refine the midrange computing model. The System/34's focus on usability, reliability, and support for multi-user environments made it a critical stepping stone in IBM's midrange computing lineage, solidifying its role as a business-oriented computing pioneer.
Architecture
The hardware of the System/34 was based on a dual-processor architecture. One processor was dedicated to managing the system's general operations, while the second handled input/output tasks, effectively boosting performance and reliability. Storage was provided by disk drives, with configurations supporting up to 256 MB, a substantial amount for its time. The system also included a variety of peripherals, such as card readers, printers, and displays, offering flexibility for a range of business applications. The IBM System/34 introduced the concept of structured programming to its users, promoting better coding practices and easier maintenance of software.
